Where this list comes from
In New Zealand, “university” is not a description an institution chooses for itself. It is a provider type on a government register: NZQA’s directory of education organisations sorts every tertiary provider into categories — university, polytechnic, wānanga, private training establishment and several others — and you can filter the directory by that category. The 8 institutions below are what that filter returns for “university”.
That matters more than it sounds. It means the question “is this a real university?” has an answer you can look up in about a minute, rather than one you have to take from an agent, a league table or a brochure. It also means a provider that is perfectly legitimate may sit in a different category — a polytechnic or a private training establishment is not a lesser institution, it is a different kind of one, and what should drive your decision is the qualification and the level it sits at.
How we counted. The register has one row per delivery site, so an institution teaching in three cities appears three times. We counted distinct Education Organisation numbers instead, which is why 8 institutions appear below where the raw register listing shows more rows.

The register lists Massey three times, once for each delivery site, but all three entries resolve to a single education organisation. Choosing a campus here is not the same decision as choosing an institution — the provider you enrol with, and that signs your offer, is the same one at all three.

How to check a provider before you pay anything
Every step below is something you do on a government site, not on ours. Run it on any provider, including ones that are not on this page.
- Find the provider in the NZQA directory and note its Education Organisation number. If it is not there, stop.
- Open that provider’s approved qualification list and confirm the exact qualification you have been offered appears on it. An approved provider can still offer you something it is not approved to award.
- Check the level the qualification sits at on the national framework. The level, not the course title, is what other countries and employers recognise.
- Check the statutory-actions page for any action NZQA has taken against the provider.
- Confirm the provider is a signatory to the learner Code of Practice. For an international student this is not optional paperwork — it is tied to the offer declaration your visa application depends on.
What this page deliberately does not tell you
There are no tuition figures, living-cost estimates, entry grades, English-test scores, application deadlines or ranking positions here, and there will not be. Every one of those is set per course or per institution and revised at least annually, so a number copied onto a third-party page is wrong within months and is worse than no number at all — it looks authoritative while being stale.
Each institution’s own site is linked above, and that is where those answers live. What we can usefully hold still for you is the part that does not change every intake: who the provider is, what category the regulator puts it in, and where to confirm both.

- Neither better nor worse — they are different regulated categories, and NZQA's own directory lets you filter by them. "University" is not a marketing word here: it is a provider type on a government register. Which category suits you depends on the qualification you want and the level it sits at, so compare the qualification rather than the label.
- How do I check that an institution is genuine before I pay anything?
- Take the Education Organisation number from this page, look the provider up in the NZQA directory, and confirm that the qualification you have been offered appears on that provider's own approved list. Then check the statutory-actions page to see whether NZQA has taken any action against it. All three links are on this page, and none of them requires you to trust us.
- Do you publish tuition fees, entry scores or rankings for these universities?
- No. Fees are set per course and revised annually, entry requirements are set per programme, and we do not publish ranking positions at all. Anything priced, scored or dated belongs on the institution's own admissions page, which is linked for each one. What we publish here is the part that stays still: who the provider is and where to verify it.
